First Aid Basics 2026: What Everyone Should Know

SynfraCore·March 2026·8 min read

Why First Aid Knowledge Saves Lives

In India, average ambulance response time in cities is 15-20 minutes. In cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR reduces survival by 7-10%. Bystander first aid in those first minutes makes the difference between life and death.

CPR — When Someone Collapses

1. Call 112 immediately
2. Lay person on firm surface, tilt head back
3. Chest compressions:
   - Heel of hand on center of chest
   - Push hard and fast: 5-6 cm deep, 100-120 per minute
   - Let chest fully recoil between compressions
4. 30 compressions : 2 rescue breaths (if trained)
5. Do NOT stop until ambulance arrives

Hands-only CPR (compressions only) is better than no CPR at all.

Choking — Heimlich Maneuver

Adult choking (cannot speak, cannot breathe):

1.Stand behind them, lean them slightly forward
2.Give 5 firm back blows between shoulder blades
3.Give 5 abdominal thrusts: fist above navel, pull sharply inward and upward
4.Alternate 5+5 until expelled or unconscious

For infants under 1 year: 5 back blows + 5 chest thrusts only — never abdominal thrusts.

FAST — Stroke Recognition

Face: Ask to smile. One side drooping?
Arms: Raise both. One drifts down?
Speech: Repeat a phrase. Slurred or strange?
Time: Any sign = call 112 immediately. Every minute of delay = more brain damage.

Also know: every home should have a basic first aid kit — sterile bandages, antiseptic, thermometer, ORS sachets, paracetamol, gloves. Check expiry dates every 6 months.
