NEET 2026 — What You Need to Know

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is the single entrance exam for MBBS and BDS admissions across India. Conducted by NTA, it has 200 questions (180 to attempt) across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Biology carries the most weight and is the differentiating subject.

Subject-wise Strategy and Marks Distribution

Biology (360 marks — 50% of total):

Botany and Zoology carry equal marks (180 each). NCERT Biology Class 11 and 12 are the definitive books — an estimated 80-90% of NEET biology questions come directly from NCERT. Read every line, every diagram caption, every table. Do not look for shortcuts in biology.

Chemistry (180 marks):

Organic Chemistry (around 30%): reaction mechanisms, named reactions, identification of compounds. Physical Chemistry (around 35%): numerical problems, equilibrium, thermodynamics. Inorganic Chemistry (35%): periodic trends, coordination compounds, p-block elements — heavily NCERT-based.

Physics (180 marks):

Calculation-heavy. Priority topics: Mechanics (30%), Electrostatics and Current Electricity (25%), Modern Physics (15%). NCERT is necessary but not sufficient for Physics — practice numerical problems from DC Pandey.

NCERT is Non-Negotiable for Biology

Do not make the mistake of reading summary books or notes instead of NCERT for Biology. The questions use exact NCERT wording. Strategy: (1) Read the chapter. (2) Make line-by-line notes of anything that feels like a 'fact'. (3) Close book and recall. (4) Solve NCERT exercises and exemplar. (5) PYQs (Previous Year Questions) from that chapter.

12-Month Preparation Timeline

Months 1-4: Complete NCERT for all subjects. Not a summary — the actual NCERT books, every chapter.

Months 5-8: Topic-by-topic problem solving. DC Pandey for Physics, VK Jaiswal for Organic Chemistry, NCERT Exemplar for Biology.

Months 9-10: Previous year papers 2015-2025 — question pattern recognition is crucial. Many concepts appear repeatedly.

Months 11-12: Full mock tests (NTA-style, 200 questions, 3 hours 20 minutes). Target 2 mocks per week. Analyse every mistake. Revision of weak areas only — stop learning new content.

Common Mistakes That Cost Marks

Negative marking: -1 for each wrong answer. Never guess randomly — only attempt if you can eliminate at least 2 of 4 options. Skipping NCERT diagrams: many questions test diagram-reading (cell structures, heart anatomy, plant tissues). Ignoring Inorganic Chemistry: students focus on Organic and Physical but Inorganic has high marks and is largely memorisation-based with NCERT.
