Personal Finance for Indian Developers 2026: Where to Put Your Money
The Advice Most Developers Do Not Get
Tech professionals in India earn well — but many reach their 30s with little to show for it: no investments, high lifestyle inflation, no plan. This guide is practical, India-specific, and based on what actually works.
Step 1: Emergency Fund First
Before any investments, build 3-6 months of expenses in an FD or liquid mutual fund. If monthly expenses are ₹50,000 → Emergency fund = ₹1,50,000 to ₹3,00,000. This protects you from lifestyle disruption if you lose your job or want to take time off between roles.
Step 2: Use All Tax-Saving Instruments
EPFO (PF): Free money — employer contributes. Never withdraw unless absolutely necessary.
Section 80C (₹1.5 lakh deduction): PPF (government-backed, 7.1% tax-free returns) + ELSS mutual funds (best if you can handle 3-year lock-in).
NPS: Additional ₹50,000 deduction under Section 80CCD(1B). Good for retirement corpus.
Health insurance: Always have your own — do not rely only on employer coverage (you lose it when you switch jobs).
Step 3: SIP in Index Funds
70-80% of active mutual fund managers underperform their benchmark index over 10 years. Index funds give you market returns at minimal cost:
Automate your SIP on the 1st of every month, right after salary credit. Increase SIP by 10-15% every year as your salary grows.
The Lifestyle Inflation Trap
Every time you get a raise, invest at least 50% of the increment. Lifestyle can improve, but not faster than your savings rate grows. The engineer who earns ₹20 LPA and invests ₹6 LPA builds more wealth than the one who earns ₹30 LPA and spends ₹28 LPA.
