Classifying fruit crops

Fruit crops are classified by climatic requirement, since climate — not soil alone — is usually the limiting factor for where a fruit crop can be grown:

The "chilling requirement" for temperate fruits is a specific, testable concept: many temperate fruit trees need a minimum number of hours below a threshold temperature during dormancy to flower and fruit properly the following season — this is why apple cultivation is geographically restricted to hill regions with adequate winter chilling, and why simply having otherwise-suitable soil and summer conditions elsewhere in India doesn't make apple cultivation viable there.

Classifying vegetable crops

Vegetables are classified by which plant part is harvested and consumed — a classification that directly affects cultivation practice, since the plant's energy allocation needs to be directed toward whichever part matters for harvest:

Propagation methods — seed vs. vegetative

Seed (sexual) propagation: growing a new plant from seed. Simple and cheap, but doesn't guarantee the new plant is genetically identical to the parent — this matters enormously for fruit crops, where a seedling grown from a superior variety's seed often doesn't reproduce that variety's exact fruit quality (due to genetic recombination in sexual reproduction), which is why most commercial fruit orchards use vegetative propagation instead.

Vegetative (asexual) propagation methods:

Cutting — a plant part (usually stem) is cut and rooted directly; simple and common for many ornamentals and some fruit crops (grapes, pomegranate).
Layering — a stem is induced to root while still attached to the parent plant, then separated once rooted; used for plants that root slowly or unreliably from cuttings alone.
Budding — a single bud from a desired variety (the "scion") is inserted into a different rootstock; widely used commercially for citrus and roses because it's fast and requires minimal scion material.
Grafting — a larger scion piece (not just a bud) is joined to a rootstock; used for mango, apple, and most tree fruits where a full branch section, not just a bud, produces a more reliably established graft union.

The universal reason vegetative propagation dominates commercial fruit cultivation: it produces a plant genetically identical to the parent, guaranteeing the same fruit quality, ripening time, and yield characteristics that made the parent variety worth propagating in the first place — a guarantee seed propagation cannot make.

Orchard establishment basics

Spacing between trees is calculated based on the mature canopy size of the specific variety — too close, and mature trees compete for light/nutrients and become difficult to manage; too wide, and land is under-utilized.
