What "feed the soil, not the plant" actually means

Chemical fertilisers deliver nutrients directly to the plant in a form it can absorb immediately — that's why the yield response is fast. What they don't do is feed the microorganisms, fungi, and earthworms that make soil alive. Over repeated seasons, that living population collapses, and soil that once released nutrients on its own becomes inert — a growing medium that only works because you keep adding chemical inputs to it.

Organic farming targets the soil biology instead. Compost, vermicompost, and jeevamrut aren't fertiliser substitutes in the "same nutrients, different source" sense — they rebuild the population of microorganisms that break down organic matter and make nutrients available to roots continuously, without needing to be re-applied every cycle. That's the mechanism behind the Year 1 → Year 3 pattern from the Overview: Year 1 yield dips because the soil biology hasn't recovered yet; by Year 3 it's doing the nutrient cycling on its own.

These aren't interchangeable — jeevamrut and panchagavya in particular get confused because both are fermented cow-based liquids. Jeevamrut is soil-focused (build the microbial population); panchagavya is plant-focused (foliar feed and immunity). A beginner setup typically starts with compost + mulch (cheapest, lowest-effort) and adds jeevamrut once the first compost batch is ready, since jeevamrut needs a fermentation period of its own.

PGS-India, explained

PGS stands for Participatory Guarantee System — India's farmer-group-based organic certification, distinct from third-party certification (NPOP/India Organic, which is what's required for export). Under PGS-India:

Farmers organize into local groups of 5+ (a "regional council"), and members inspect each other's farms rather than paying an external auditor.
It's free, which is why it's the realistic certification path for small and home farmers — NPOP third-party certification has real inspection costs that don't make sense at terrace-garden or small-plot scale.
Certification isn't instant: PGS-India uses a conversion period (typically documented over 2 years) during which the farm is tracked as "in-conversion" before getting the full "PGS Organic" mark.
It's the certification referenced in the Overview's Year 2 milestone ("apply for PGS-India cert") — that timing lines up with the conversion-period requirement, not an arbitrary suggestion.

If the goal is eventually exporting produce, PGS-India alone isn't sufficient — that requires NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production) certification, which is third-party audited and recognized internationally. Most home and small-farm growers only need PGS-India.

Getting started — the first 30 days

1.Pick a starting point that matches your scale. Terrace/home garden (see Module 03 in the Overview) if you don't have farmland; a 25% land conversion (Overview's "Year 1" plan) if you're an existing farmer transitioning.
2.Start a compost bin immediately — it's the slowest-to-ready input (45–60 days) and everything else depends on having compost on hand, so start it on day one even before you've decided exactly what to plant.
3.Stop new chemical inputs on the area you're converting — you can't be "a little bit organic" on the same soil; residual chemical inputs interfere with the microbial rebuilding process jeevamrut and compost are trying to do.
4.Source a jeevamrut starter — you need fresh desi (indigenous breed) cow dung and urine; this is usually the first logistical blocker for urban/terrace growers, and it's worth sourcing before you need it, not after.
5.Plant something low-risk first — coriander, methi (fenugreek), or spinach: fast-growing, forgiving of imperfect soil, and gives you a result within weeks rather than months, which matters for staying motivated through Year 1's yield dip.

Common beginner mistakes

Expecting Year-1 yield to match chemical yield. It won't — that's the transition dip, not a sign you're doing it wrong. Reverting to chemicals at the first bad harvest is the single most common reason people give up on the transition (see Advanced for why the reversion decision itself causes a second, worse setback).
Over-watering because organic soil "looks dry." Organic soil with good mulch retains water far better than chemical soil (it holds moisture like a sponge rather than shedding it) — watering on a chemical-farming schedule over-waters organic soil and encourages fungal issues.
Using non-organic seeds without realizing it. Certified organic status (PGS-India or NPOP) generally requires organic-sourced seed, not just organic-input growing — treated/chemically-coated seed is a common accidental disqualifier people don't check for until certification time.
Skipping soil testing. Compost and jeevamrut are broadly beneficial, but if you don't know your starting soil pH and nutrient profile, you can't tell whether a poor result is a transition-dip issue or an actual deficiency that needs a specific correction (e.g., adding gypsum for sodic soil).
