HAL Exam Intermediate — English & Reasoning

Why English & Reasoning is graded together as one paper here

Unlike UPSC or banking exams, which usually give English and Reasoning fully separate papers, HAL's combined "English & Reasoning" section means time management across the two sub-parts is a candidate's own call — there's no enforced sectional timer splitting them. That single fact changes strategy: a candidate strong in reasoning but slower at comprehension passages should budget time deliberately rather than assuming an even split, since the paper doesn't do that budgeting for them.

English — the recurring question types

Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution
Grammar: Error spotting, sentence correction, fill-in-the-blanks
Comprehension: Short passages with 3-5 questions each — main idea, inference, vocabulary-in-context
Sentence structure: Para jumbles (rearranging sentences into logical order), idioms & phrases

A pattern worth internalizing rather than memorizing case by case: error-spotting questions in PSU-style exams disproportionately test subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and preposition usage — not obscure grammar rules. Drilling those three categories specifically covers a reliable fraction of error-spotting questions, the same "allocate effort to what's actually tested, not the full grammar textbook" logic that applies to GA's static-vs-current-affairs split.

Reasoning — worked examples, the way PSU papers actually phrase them

Coding-Decoding

Typical question pattern: "If CODE is written as DPEF, how is WORK written in the same code?"

Working through it:

1.Identify the shift: C→D (+1), O→P (+1), D→E (+1), E→F (+1) — every letter shifts forward by 1
2.Apply the same shift to WORK: W→X, O→P, R→S, K→L
3.Answer: XPSL

The recurring skill isn't memorizing this specific code — it's the habit of checking each letter pair individually before assuming a pattern, since some questions mix shift directions or use non-uniform shifts to catch candidates who pattern-match too fast.

Syllogism

Typical question pattern: "All engineers are graduates. Some graduates are managers. Conclusion: Some engineers are managers."

Working through it: This conclusion does not necessarily follow — "some graduates are managers" doesn't guarantee the specific graduates who are also engineers overlap with the graduates who are managers. Venn-diagram sketching (draw the three sets and check for a forced overlap) is more reliable than mentally reasoning through syllogisms, especially under time pressure — a habit worth building in practice, not first attempting on exam day.

Number Series & Odd-One-Out

Typical question pattern: "Find the odd one out: 8, 27, 64, 100, 125"

Working through it: 8=2³, 27=3³, 64=4³, 125=5³ are all perfect cubes; 100 is not a perfect cube (it's 10²) — so 100 is the odd one out. The recurring skill is checking multiple possible patterns (squares, cubes, primes, arithmetic/geometric progression) quickly rather than fixating on the first pattern that seems to fit two or three numbers.

Blood Relations

Typical question pattern: "Pointing to a photograph, a man said, 'She is the daughter of my grandfather's only son.' How is the woman related to the man?"

Working through it:

1."My grandfather's only son" = the man's father (assuming the man's father has no brothers)
2."Daughter of my father" = the man's sister
3.Answer: Sister

Blood-relation questions reward drawing a quick family tree diagram over holding the relationships purely in your head — a two-line sketch prevents the most common error, which is losing track of whose perspective a pronoun refers to partway through a longer chain.

Reasoning topic checklist

Coding-decoding, syllogism, blood relations, number series, seating arrangement, direction sense, analogy, classification (odd-one-out), statement-conclusion, and basic data interpretation are the categories that recur most consistently across PSU-style reasoning sections.

Exam strategy specific to this section

Accuracy over speed on Reasoning: unlike GA (pure recall, near-instant per question), reasoning questions have variable difficulty — a seating-arrangement puzzle can eat 3-4 minutes alone. Skipping a stuck question early and returning later, if time remains, beats losing 5 minutes to one question and running out of time for five easier ones later in the section.
English comprehension passages last, within the section: vocabulary and grammar questions are faster per-question wins; save comprehension passages (which take longer to read) for after the quick-win questions are locked in, so a time crunch costs comprehension marks rather than easy vocabulary marks.
