Cloud Landing Zones Fundamentals
The hook: this is infrastructure for infrastructure
Everything else in the Cloud academy — VMs, networking, databases — assumes you already have a well-organized account/subscription to deploy them into. Landing zones are the layer underneath all of that: the decisions about account structure, guardrails, and identity that have to exist before the first real workload goes anywhere, because retrofitting them onto an already-sprawling set of accounts is dramatically harder than starting with them in place.
Analogy
Think of it as building a city before people move in: roads (networking), laws (policies), districts (account/subscription structure), utilities (logging, monitoring), and security (IAM, guardrails) are all established first.

What is a Cloud Landing Zone?
A cloud landing zone is a pre-configured, scalable cloud environment based on best practices that serves as a starting point for enterprise cloud adoption. It implements multi-account/subscription structures, security guardrails, networking foundations, and governance before workloads are deployed.
Why Landing Zones Matter
WITHOUT A LANDING ZONE:
Each team creates their own AWS accounts or Azure subscriptions
Inconsistent security configurations across the organization
No centralized logging or visibility
Difficult to enforce compliance (HIPAA, PCI, SOC2)
Cost sprawl: no unified billing view
Security incidents are harder to detect and contain
WITH A LANDING ZONE:
Consistent security baseline across all environments
Centralized logging (all CloudTrail, activity logs in one place)
Guardrails prevent common mistakes (public S3, no MFA)
Clear account/subscription structure (platform vs workload accounts)
Simplified compliance: controls applied at management group/OU level

Compare the AWS Organizations structure and the Azure Management Group hierarchy above side by side. Both separate "platform/infrastructure" accounts from "workload" accounts and both have a sandbox tier with looser controls — write down which AWS OU corresponds to which Azure MG. This mapping exercise is the fastest way to confirm you understand the underlying concept (separation by function and blast-radius, not by vendor-specific naming) rather than two unrelated vendor-specific hierarchies to memorize separately.
