Food Processing & Agri-Business — Fundamentals

Step 1 — FSSAI licensing is the real gating step, not an afterthought

Every food business in India needs an FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) registration or license — this is not optional and not skippable regardless of scale. The tier depends on annual turnover:

  Basic Registration -- turnover up to Rs. 1.5 crore
  State License       -- turnover Rs. 1.5 crore to Rs. 50 crore
  Central License      -- turnover above Rs. 50 crore

Note: certain categories of food business must obtain a State or
Central license regardless of turnover, irrespective of how small the
business actually is -- check the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance
System) eligibility matrix for your specific product category before
assuming Basic Registration applies just because your turnover is low.

Step 2 — Other required registrations (applies broadly, not just to food)

•Udyam (MSME) registration — free, online, and required for most food-processing-specific financing schemes covered in Step 3.

•GST registration — mandatory above the relevant turnover threshold, and needed in practice for most B2B supply relationships regardless.

•State Pollution Control Board consent/NOC — required for processing units above a certain scale or with specific effluent/waste profiles (dal mills and rice mills, for instance, generate husk and byproduct that need a disposal or use plan) — the exact requirement is unit-type and state-specific, not universal.

Step 3 — Financing: three genuinely different schemes, correctly named

Overview flagged a real naming trap. Naming each precisely here, rather than by ambiguous acronym alone:
