When to wash hands:
Before: eating, cooking, treating wounds
After: toilet, touching garbage, handling raw meat, coughing/sneezing
How to wash (WHO 6-step method, 40-60 seconds):
1. Wet hands with clean water, apply soap
2. Rub palms together
3. Rub back of each hand (palm over dorsum)
4. Interlace fingers, rub between them
5. Rub backs of fingers (hands clasped)
6. Rotate thumb in clasped palm
7. Rub fingertips in palm (both hands)
8. Rinse thoroughly, dry with clean towel
Soap vs Hand Sanitizer:
Soap: better for visible dirt, removes more pathogens
Sanitizer (≥60% alcohol): convenient when no water, good for COVID/flu
Soap better for: C. difficile, norovirus, cryptosporidium
Brushing:
Twice daily — morning + before bed (most important)
2 minutes each time
Soft-bristled brush, fluoride toothpaste
Technique: 45° angle to gums, gentle circular motions
Replace brush every 3 months (or after illness)
Flossing:
Once daily (before brushing)
Most cavities form between teeth — brush alone can't reach
Alternative: water flosser (Waterpik)
Dental visits: Every 6 months for cleaning and check-up
Avoid: Excessive sugar/acid (erodes enamel), smoking (gum disease, cancer)
Daily:
Bath/shower: removes sweat, bacteria, dead skin cells
Underarm hygiene: most body odor originates here
Clean clothes: socks and underwear changed daily
Skin care:
Moisturize: prevents dry skin and cracks (entry points for bacteria)
Sunscreen: minimum SPF 30 daily, reapply every 2 hours outdoors
Food hygiene:
Wash fruits/vegetables before eating
Separate raw meat from other foods
Cook food to proper temperatures
Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours
Don't refreeze thawed meat
