Core mental model

JEE Main covers PCM together in one paper (unlike subject-specific JEE Advanced), serves dual purposes: direct NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission via JoSAA, AND qualifying eligibility for JEE Advanced.
Two sessions/year (January, April) — best score across both counts for JoSAA. Treat January as a genuine attempt, not a practice run — under-preparing for it compresses your effective preparation timeline.

Percentile normalization

Your percentile compares you only against candidates in YOUR specific shift, not all shifts/days directly — accounts for inevitable difficulty variance across shifts.
A subjectively "hard" shift doesn't necessarily hurt relative standing — normalization is designed to correct for exactly this. Don't panic or rush in response to a paper that feels difficult; it's likely harder for everyone in that shift too.
Track PERCENTILE trend across January→April, not raw score — a raw score increase without a percentile increase may just reflect an easier paper, not genuine improvement.

Negative marking asymmetry — the JEE-Main-specific strategic point

MCQs: -1 for wrong — apply conservative, partial-elimination-only attempt logic (same expected-value reasoning as NEET).
Numerical-value questions: NO negative marking — attempt every one you have any working method for; there's no downside risk, only potential upside.
Within the numerical section, scan all 10 first and select the 5 with the clearest/fastest working method — don't just attempt in presented order.

NCERT and formula recall

NCERT-level conceptual clarity directly answers a substantial share of Main questions (more than many candidates expect) — Main's more formula-direct style gives NCERT mastery disproportionately high value compared to Advanced.
Genuine recall (write correctly from memory, understand term origins, can derive variants) beats passive recognition — time pressure doesn't allow reconstructing a half-remembered formula mid-exam.
Build speed by establishing accuracy FIRST (untimed/generous practice), then progressively compressing time — speed built on a shaky foundation just produces fast wrong answers.

January result diagnosis → April strategy

Compare January's result against your own established mock-test trend: underperformed relative to mocks → likely an exam-day execution issue (nerves, time management) → April prep should emphasize more full-condition mocks. Performed in line with mocks → likely a genuine content gap → April prep should target specific identified weak topics.
Generic "study more" without this diagnosis tends to produce smaller improvement than targeted preparation addressing the actual gap.

PYQ analysis — extract patterns, not just practice reps

Systematically note which chapters recur disproportionately, which question FORMATS repeat even as specifics change, and which NCERT-adjacent questions recur nearly verbatim in structure — this is genuinely different, more valuable information than the syllabus document alone provides.

Transitioning to JEE Advanced (if qualified)

Advanced requires a genuine strategy shift, not "more of the same, harder" — multi-concept synthesis practice becomes the priority over pure formula-recall speed, within a typically compressed preparation window.
Prepare for both live outcomes (NIT/IIIT via JoSAA, and Advanced/IIT) rather than committing exclusively to the IIT path — understand realistic JoSAA options across percentile ranges, not just the highest-outcome scenario.
