UPSC Geography Optional — Intermediate (Paper I: Principles of Geography)
Paper I has two sections of five units each: Physical Geography (Section A) and Human Geography (Section B). This is the exact structure and topic list as given in UPSC's official syllabus.

How to actually study Section A
The five units are not independent silos — they build on each other in the order given. Geomorphology (landforms) sets the physical stage; Climatology (weather/climate patterns) explains why those landforms experience the rainfall/temperature regimes they do; Oceanography extends the same atmospheric principles to ocean behaviour; Biogeography (soils, flora, fauna) is a direct consequence of the climate and landform combination; Environmental Geography is the synthesis unit — how humans interact with everything covered in units 1-4. Studying them in sequence, rather than jumping around, makes each new unit easier because it reuses concepts from the one before it.
High-yield linkage to memorise: Plate tectonics (Geomorphology) → determines mountain location → mountains force orographic rainfall (Climatology) → rainfall pattern determines soil type and vegetation belt (Biogeography) → human settlement and land use responds to all of the above (sets up Human Geography and, later, Paper II).

How to actually study Section B
Unit 5 (Models, Theories and Laws) is the unit examiners return to most often precisely because it is name-and-mechanism testable — "Explain Von Thunen's model" is a cleaner, more objectively gradable question than an open-ended discussion. Learn every named model in Unit 5 with: (a) who proposed it, (b) what it explains, (c) one labelled diagram, (d) one real-world limitation. That four-part template turns a memorisation risk into a scoring strength.
Units 1-4 build the vocabulary and framework that Unit 5's models then formalise mathematically/diagrammatically — e.g., Unit 3's "hierarchy of urban settlements" is the descriptive version of Unit 5's Central Place Theory (Christaller); Unit 2's "typology of agricultural regions" is the descriptive version of Unit 5's Von Thunen model. Recognising these pairings cuts revision time significantly since you're really learning one idea twice, at two levels of formality.
Cross-cutting exam skill: the map question habit starts now
Even though the compulsory map question belongs to Paper II, Paper I concepts (ocean currents, climate zones, plate boundaries, population distribution) are also frequently asked as sketch-map or diagram-supported answers. Build the habit here: every time you learn a Paper I concept that has a spatial dimension, sketch it — don't just read about it.
