What Articleship Is
Articleship is a mandatory 3-year practical training period under a practicing Chartered Accountant, required by ICAI between (or overlapping) the Intermediate and Final levels. It's what makes the CA qualification practice-ready rather than purely theoretical — you can't become a CA without completing it.
Registering for Articleship
1.Eligibility: Clear at least one group of CA Intermediate (both groups not required to start).
2.ICITSS: Complete the Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (a short mandatory course) before registering.
3.Find a principal: A practicing CA or CA firm willing to take you on — through campus placement, direct application, or referrals.
4.Register with ICAI: Submit Form 102/103 within 30 days of starting articleship, along with the deed of articles signed by you and your principal.

AICITSS
Before appearing for CA Final, you must also complete AICITSS (Advanced ICITSS) — Advanced IT and Management Communication Skills — typically during the last year of articleship.
Common Practical Questions
•Can I change my principal mid-articleship? Yes, under specific ICAI-permitted conditions (transfer provisions), but it resets some continuity requirements — check current ICAI rules before switching.
•Can I study for Intermediate/Final while doing articleship? Yes — this is the norm, not the exception. Most successful candidates study evenings/weekends throughout articleship rather than treating it as a separate phase.
•Stipend: ICAI mandates a minimum stipend that increases by city classification and year of articleship — it is modest, and most articled clerks treat it as training compensation, not a living wage.
