Derivatives — instruments deriving value from an underlying asset
A derivative is a financial contract whose value is derived from the price of an underlying asset (a stock, index, commodity, or currency) rather than having independent value of its own. The two most common derivative types are futures (a standardized contract obligating both parties to buy/sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price on a specified future date) and options (a contract giving the buyer the right but not the obligation to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price within a specified period, in exchange for paying a premium to the option seller). Why derivatives exist — hedging and speculation
