You don't need to diagnose patients, but you cannot accurately assign a code without understanding which body system and structure a diagnosis or procedure refers to. ICD-10-CM is organized by body system — knowing anatomy is what lets you navigate the codebook instead of guessing.

Anatomical Position & Directional Terms

Medical documentation assumes a standard reference frame:

Anterior/Posterior — front/back
Superior/Inferior — above/below
Medial/Lateral — toward/away from the body's midline

Physiology Basics That Affect Coding

Acute vs chronic conditions are coded differently — understanding disease progression (e.g. acute kidney injury vs chronic kidney disease) is a physiology question before it's a coding question.
Complications and comorbidities (CC/MCC) in inpatient coding often hinge on understanding how one condition physiologically affects another organ system (e.g., diabetes → kidney disease).

How This Feeds Into the Rest of the Roadmap

Anatomy & Physiology → Medical Terminology (naming what you now understand structurally) → ICD-10-CM Fundamentals (coding it) is the natural learning sequence. Skipping straight to ICD-10-CM without this foundation is the single most common reason new coders struggle with site-specificity requirements.
