The connecting vowel: the detail that makes compound terms make sense

The Overview tab's prefix + root + suffix formula is the core pattern — the piece worth adding at the fundamentals level is the combining vowel (almost always "o"), which connects a root to another root or to a suffix that begins with a consonant, specifically to make the term pronounceable:

gastr/o + enter/o + -logy = gastroenterology  (study of stomach and intestines)
                             (the "o" connects gastr to enter to make it flow)

gastr + -itis = gastritis   (NOT gastro-itis — no connecting vowel needed
                              here, because -itis starts with a vowel)

The rule worth internalizing rather than memorizing case-by-case: a combining vowel is used when the following part starts with a consonant, and dropped when the following part starts with a vowel. This single rule explains why "gastritis" has no "o" but "gastroenterology" does — recognizing this pattern lets you correctly build and decode compound terms you've never seen before, rather than needing to have memorized each specific word.

The systematic approach worth building as a habit: read a compound term right to left first — the suffix usually tells you the category of what's happening (inflammation, disease, enlargement, removal), and the roots before it tell you where. This ordering (category first, then location) is often the fastest way to get an initial sense of an unfamiliar term before working through the full breakdown.

Singular and plural forms: a real, practical trap

Medical terminology draws heavily from Latin and Greek, and plural forms often don't follow standard English rules — getting this wrong in documentation or when searching a codebook index is a common, avoidable error:

diagnosis → diagnoses     (NOT diagnosises)
vertebra → vertebrae      (NOT vertebras)

Building your first personal reference list, deliberately

Rather than attempting to memorize a large list of terms all at once, the practical approach that actually works: as you encounter unfamiliar terms in practice materials or real documentation, decode them using the prefix/root/suffix method, and specifically note any root, prefix, or suffix that wasn't already in your working set — over time, this builds a genuinely internalized vocabulary of word parts (the ~50 roots, ~20 prefixes, ~20 suffixes the Overview tab references) far more durably than attempting to memorize a static list of whole words upfront, since the word-part approach transfers to decoding entirely new terms later, while a memorized whole-word list only helps with the exact words memorized.
