Legal Career Growth — Building a Specialisation (Years 3–8)
Why Specialise
Generalists plateau early; specialists compound. Referrals, repeat clients, and higher fee realisation all flow toward advocates who are known for a specific kind of matter rather than "general litigation."
Common Specialisation Paths in India
| Specialisation | What it involves | Typical entry point |
|---|
|---|---|---|
| Criminal law | Bail, trial, appeals | District court litigation |
|---|---|---|
| Corporate/commercial | Contracts, M&A support, compliance | In-house or law firm associate |
| Consumer protection | Consumer Protection Act 2019, NCDRC/State/District Commissions | Growing area, lower entry barrier |
| Family law | Divorce, custody, maintenance | District court practice |
| Constitutional/writ practice | High Court and Supreme Court writs | Usually after several years of grounding |
| Taxation & GST | Assessments, appeals before Tribunals | Chartered accountant referral networks |
| Intellectual property | Trademark, copyright, patent litigation | IP-focused firms, corporate referrals |
How to Choose
Pick a specialisation based on three practical filters, not just interest:
1.Court access — a specialisation only pays off if you can regularly appear before the forum that hears those matters (e.g., NCDRC filings are pointless if you're not near a Commission bench).
2.Local demand — a district with heavy industrial activity generates more labour/commercial work than constitutional writ work; match your specialisation to what's actually being litigated around you.
3.Sustainability — some specialisations (family law, criminal defence) involve sustained emotionally difficult client interactions; be honest about what you can do for a decade, not just what pays well now.
Building Credibility in a Specialisation
•Publish short notes/articles on recent judgments in your chosen area — many advocates build early reputation this way.
•Attend and eventually speak at Bar association CLE sessions in your specialisation.
•Take on a few matters below market rate early on specifically to build a track record and case citations you can point to later.
•Track every judgment you've argued or assisted on — this becomes your portfolio when seeking referrals or lateral moves to a specialised chamber/firm.
