Placement Training — Complete Guide
Why This Chapter Matters
Campus placements are the bridge from college to career. Understanding the full recruitment process — aptitude, group discussion, technical interview, HR interview — and preparing systematically determines whether you get your dream company.
Phase 1 — Aptitude Test
What to Prepare (by round)
Quantitative: Percentage, profit-loss, time-work, speed-distance, number system, probability, permutation-combination.
Verbal: Reading comprehension, sentence correction, vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, fill-in-the-blanks).
Logical Reasoning: Series, analogy, blood relations, direction, seating arrangement, syllogism.
Technical: C/C++, Java, Python output questions; data structures; DBMS queries; OS concepts.
Preparation Timeline
6 months before placements: Start aptitude basics (1 hour/day).
3 months before: Mock tests daily. IndiaBix, PrepInsta, previous company papers.
1 month before: Company-specific papers. Speed improvement.
Mock Test Strategy
Attempt 1 mock per day for 30 days before placement season.
After each mock: analyse wrong answers — understand WHY, not just WHAT.
Time yourself strictly — exam conditions matter.
Phase 2 — Group Discussion (GD)
What Evaluators Look For
Communication clarity | Leadership | Listening skills | Subject knowledge | Initiating or summarising | Not interrupting | Bringing others in
GD Topics (Common Types)
Social: Gender equality, education system, reservation policy, social media impact.
Business: Startups vs corporates, work from home, gig economy.
Current affairs: AI and jobs, climate change, digital India.
Abstract: "Change is the only constant", "A stitch in time saves nine".
GD Tips
Open the GD if you have a strong point — first impression matters.
If you can't open, make a strong early point in the first 2 minutes.
Listen actively — refer to what others said (shows you're paying attention).
Don't be loud, but don't be silent. Aim for 3-4 meaningful contributions.
If discussion goes off-track, summarise and bring back: "I think we've covered X and Y, but haven't discussed Z..."
Conclude confidently if asked to.
Phase 3 — Technical Interview
Core Topics by Role
Software Development Engineer (SDE):
Data Structures: Array, LinkedList, Stack, Queue, Tree, Graph, Heap, HashTable.
Algorithms: Sorting, Searching, Dynamic Programming, Greedy, BFS, DFS.
OOP Concepts: Encapsulation, Inheritance, Polymorphism, Abstraction.
DBMS: Normalisation (1NF,2NF,3NF,BCNF), SQL, Transactions, ACID.
OS: Process vs Thread, Deadlock, Paging, Scheduling algorithms.
System Design (senior): Load balancing, Caching, Microservices, CAP theorem.
DevOps/Cloud Engineer:
Linux commands, Shell scripting, Docker, Kubernetes basics.
CI/CD pipeline concepts, Git workflow.
Cloud: AWS/Azure/GCP core services.
Data Analyst/Data Scientist:
SQL (JOIN, GROUP BY, subquery, window functions).
Statistics (mean, median, mode, regression, hypothesis testing).
Python (Pandas, NumPy basics).
Machine learning concepts (supervised vs unsupervised, overfitting).
Technical Interview Approach
"Tell me about a project" → State problem, your role, tech stack, challenges, outcome.
Code questions → Think aloud. Clarify edge cases before coding.
If you don't know → say "I'm not certain but I think..." or "I'd look it up to confirm."
Don't pretend to know what you don't.
Phase 4 — HR Interview
Standard questions and frameworks (see Interview Preparation chapter):
"Tell me about yourself" | "Why this company" | "Strengths/Weaknesses" | "5-year plan"
Salary negotiation | Notice period | Relocation willingness
Placement Day Checklist
Print: 5 copies of resume, all mark sheets, certificates (original + copy).
Dress: Formals. Conservative. No strong perfume.
Arrive: 30 minutes early.
Carry: Pen, notepad, water, snack.
Phone: Switch to silent or airplane mode.
Research: Company's products, recent news, tech stack used.
Resources for Placement Prep
Aptitude: IndiaBix, PrepInsta, GeeksForGeeks aptitude section.
DSA: LeetCode (start Easy), HackerRank, Codeforces.
Company papers: PrepInsta company-specific pages, Glassdoor interview experiences.
GD topics: InsightsIAS for current affairs, Group Discussion Ideas website.
Mock interviews: Pramp (peer mock interviews), Interviewing.io.
Salary Negotiation
Research: Glassdoor, AmbitionBox, LinkedIn Salary for the role and location.
Never first number: "I'm flexible, what's the budgeted range?"
If pressed: Salary = Market rate + 20-30% buffer.
Don't accept on spot: "I'd like 24-48 hours to consider." Always okay.
Negotiate components: Base, variable, joining bonus, annual appraisal.
