Why This Chapter Matters

A strong resume is the difference between getting shortlisted and being ignored. Whether you are a fresher or experienced professional, a well-structured, ATS-optimised resume is critical for every job application.

Resume vs CV

Resume: 1-2 pages. Tailored for a specific job. Most common in India for industry roles.

CV (Curriculum Vitae): Longer, detailed academic record. Used for research, academic, and government positions.

ATS (Applicant Tracking System)

Most companies use ATS software to filter resumes BEFORE a human reads them.

ATS scans for keywords from the job description.

ATS-friendly resume rules:

•Use standard fonts: Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman (11-12 pt body, 14-16 pt heading)

•Avoid tables, text boxes, graphics, headers/footers, fancy designs

•Use standard section headings: "Work Experience", "Education", "Skills"

•Include keywords verbatim from the job description

Soft skills: limit to 3-4 specific ones (avoid generic: "team player")

PROJECTS (most important for fresher)

INTERNSHIPS / EXPERIENCE

- Use action verbs: "Developed", "Implemented", "Reduced", "Led"

- Focus on impact, not just tasks

Resume Structure (For Experienced / 3+ years)

Same structure but WORK EXPERIENCE comes FIRST (before education).

Summary section becomes crucial — state your years of experience, domain, and key achievement.

Example summary:

"DevOps Engineer with 5+ years of experience designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines on AWS and GCP. Reduced deployment time by 70% at [Company]. AWS Certified Solutions Architect with expertise in Kubernetes, Terraform, and monitoring with Prometheus/Grafana."

Quantification — The Most Important Skill

Convert every achievement to a number:

❌ "Improved application performance"

✅ "Improved API response time by 40%, reducing server costs by Rs 2.5 lakh/month"

❌ "Led a team"

✅ "Led a 5-member team to deliver a microservices migration 2 weeks ahead of schedule"

❌ "Managed AWS infrastructure"

✅ "Managed 200+ EC2 instances across 3 regions, maintaining 99.9% uptime"

Action Verbs for Different Roles

Technical: Developed, Implemented, Architected, Deployed, Automated, Integrated, Optimised, Debugged, Containerised, Migrated

Leadership: Led, Managed, Mentored, Coordinated, Directed, Facilitated, Initiated

Analysis: Analysed, Evaluated, Researched, Identified, Assessed, Monitored, Tracked

Results: Reduced, Improved, Increased, Accelerated, Streamlined, Saved, Delivered

Common Resume Mistakes

❌ Generic objective ("To work in a good company...")

❌ Including photo, date of birth, marital status (not needed for most companies)

❌ Using "I" in resume (write in third person implicitly: "Developed..." not "I developed...")

❌ Spelling and grammar errors (will get you rejected immediately)

❌ Using same resume for every job (tailor for each job description)

❌ Listing responsibilities instead of achievements

❌ Adding skills you barely know (will be exposed in interview)

ATS RULES: Standard fonts, no tables/graphics, use keywords from JD, standard headings

RESUME ORDER (Fresher): Objective → Education → Skills → Projects → Internship
RESUME ORDER (Experienced): Summary → Experience → Skills → Education → Certifications

QUANTIFY EVERYTHING: numbers make achievements credible and memorable
ACTION VERBS: Developed/Implemented/Reduced/Led/Managed — never "Responsible for"
TAILOR: Customise for each job — match keywords from JD
