Why This Chapter Matters

This is Geography Chapter 1 in Class 10 — 4-6 marks in boards every year. Resource classification, land use, soil types, and conservation methods are the key topics tested.

Core Concepts

1. What is a Resource?

Everything in the environment which can be used to satisfy human needs — provided it is:

Technologically accessible
Economically feasible
Culturally acceptable

Resources are not static — something becomes a resource when humans find a way to use it.

2. Classification of Resources

On the basis of origin:

Biotic: living things (plants, animals, fish)

Abiotic: non-living things (rocks, minerals, water, metals)

On the basis of exhaustibility:

Renewable: can be regenerated (solar energy, wind, water, forests)

Non-renewable: formed over millions of years, cannot be quickly renewed (coal, oil, minerals)

On the basis of ownership:

Individual: owned privately (land, house, pond)

Community/Common property: accessible to all community members (common pastures, village ponds)

National: owned by the state (forests, rivers, minerals, ocean within territorial limit)

International: beyond national jurisdiction (open oceans, celestial bodies, Antarctica)

On the basis of development:

Potential: found but not used (Rajasthan wind/solar — vast potential)

Developed/Stock: surveyed and being used

Reserves: currently not being used but can be used in future

3. Resource Planning in India

Resources are not evenly distributed. India has:

Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, MP: mineral-rich but underdeveloped
Rajasthan: huge renewable energy potential
Arunachal Pradesh: water resources but lacks capital

Resource planning involves:

1.Identification and inventory of resources
2.Planning for development with appropriate technology
3.Matching with overall national development plans

4. Land Resources

Land degradation:

Deforestation (most important cause)
Mining and quarrying
Overgrazing
Salinisation (waterlogging in irrigated areas)
Floods and wind erosion

Conservation:

Afforestation (planting trees)
Contour ploughing (across slopes)
Terrace farming
Check dams
Strip cropping

Land use categories:

Forest land | Barren/uncultivable | Permanent pastures | Miscellaneous tree crops | Cultivable waste | Fallow lands | Net sown area

India's net sown area is highest in Punjab and Haryana. Net sown area has increased since independence but forest area has remained largely unchanged.

5. Soil Resources

Soil is the most important renewable natural resource — food grows in it.

Soil conservation methods:

Contour bunding (embankments along contour lines)
Terrace cultivation (hill slopes cut into steps)
Strip cropping (different crops in alternating strips)
Shelter belts (rows of trees to block wind — Rajasthan, plains)
Mulching (covering soil between plants)

Potential resources: available in a region but not yet used due to lack of technology or capital (e.g., wind energy in Rajasthan, uranium in Ladakh). Stock resources: those that have been assessed for use but due to lack of technology cannot be utilised (e.g., hydrogen as fuel — exists but technology not yet cost-effective at scale).

2022: Why is resource planning essential in India?

India has unequal distribution of resources — some states are mineral-rich but poor, others have human resources but lack minerals. Resource planning prevents over-exploitation, ensures sustainable use, and makes sure development reaches all regions. Without planning, resources are wasted, degraded, or only benefit some people.

2021: What is black soil? State its characteristics and the crop best suited for it.

Black soil (Regur/Cotton soil) is found in the Deccan plateau. Characteristics: high moisture retention, deep cracks when dry (self-ploughing), rich in calcium, potassium, and magnesium but poor in nitrogen. Best suited crop: cotton (also called black cotton soil). Also supports jowar, linseed, and sugarcane.
