Discipline-specific technical content — what's actually tested

Applying Fundamentals' discipline-structure point in more depth: each engineering discipline's PSU technical content overlaps substantially with its GATE syllabus, but with some PSU-specific emphasis shifts. Mechanical engineering candidates should expect strong emphasis on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and machine design — particularly relevant for power-generation PSUs (NTPC) and heavy-equipment PSUs (BHEL) where these are core to the PSU's actual engineering work. Electrical candidates should expect emphasis on power systems, electrical machines, and control systems — again mapped closely to what a power-sector PSU (NTPC, BHEL) actually does. Electronics and Communication candidates (relevant especially to BEL, a defense-electronics PSU) should expect emphasis on communication systems, signal processing, and electronic devices. Chemical engineering candidates (relevant especially to ONGC and GAIL, both oil-and-gas-sector PSUs) should expect emphasis on process engineering, thermodynamics, and industry-specific process knowledge (refining, gas processing). This alignment between PSU business area and technical exam emphasis isn't coincidental — PSU technical exams are designed to identify candidates whose depth matches the PSU's actual engineering needs, not generic discipline breadth.

Aptitude section preparation

The aptitude component (present in most standalone PSU exams, and often in a lighter form even for some GATE-route final-stage assessments) tests quantitative reasoning (arithmetic, algebra, data interpretation), logical reasoning (pattern recognition, analytical puzzles), and verbal ability (comprehension, grammar) — broadly similar in structure to aptitude sections in other competitive government exams, though typically less extensive than a dedicated bank-exam-style aptitude section, since PSU exams weight technical knowledge more heavily than pure aptitude for technical-cadre postings. Candidates with strong technical preparation but weak aptitude-section practice sometimes underperform relative to their technical strength — treating the aptitude section as a genuinely separate preparation area (not something that technical strength alone compensates for) is a common practical gap worth addressing directly.

General awareness — industry-sector relevance

Some standalone PSU exams include a general-awareness component with meaningful weight toward the PSU's own industry sector — an energy-sector PSU's exam may include current-affairs questions specifically about energy policy, government schemes relevant to that sector, or recent developments at the PSU itself. This is a distinct preparation area from pure technical/aptitude content, and candidates targeting a specific PSU benefit from following that PSU's and its sector's current developments in the months leading up to the exam, not just generic current-affairs preparation.

GATE-route candidates — what "beyond GATE" preparation looks like

Even for GATE-route PSU targets, preparation doesn't end at achieving a qualifying GATE score — document verification, and critically, the interview stage (Advanced) remain gates a strong GATE score alone doesn't clear. GATE-route candidates should treat their qualifying GATE score as clearing only the first of several selection stages, not as functionally equivalent to a job offer, and should prepare for the subsequent interview stage with the same seriousness a standalone-exam candidate applies to interview preparation after their written exam.
