Reading your own sleep architecture, in practical terms
This is the practical reasoning behind sleep-cycle-based alarm timing (whether via a tracking device or simply calculating backward from wake time in 90-minute increments) — waking during N3 (deep, slow-wave sleep) genuinely produces a different, groggier subjective experience than waking during N1/N2 or right after a REM period, even at the identical total sleep duration. This doesn't mean total sleep duration doesn't matter (it does, independently) — it means when within a cycle you wake also has a real, felt effect worth understanding rather than treating all wake-up moments as equivalent.
The one metric worth tracking if you track nothing else
If building a full tracking habit (device-based HRV, sleep stages) feels like too much to start, the Overview tab's free option — bedtime, wake time, and a simple 1-10 subjective morning freshness rating — captures the majority of practical value with minimal effort. The real purpose of tracking anything at this fundamentals level isn't precision, it's pattern recognition over time: noticing that mornings after a late caffeine cutoff or consistent wake time genuinely correlate with higher subjective freshness ratings is what turns abstract sleep hygiene advice into personally-verified, motivating evidence specific to your own body's actual response.
