Building a genuinely sustainable wind-down routine, not just a checklist

A wind-down routine's actual mechanism of benefit is reducing physiological and cognitive arousal before attempting sleep — this means the specific activities matter less than whether they genuinely produce that effect for the individual, which varies meaningfully between people:

Reduces arousal for most people:
  Reading (physical book, dim light), light stretching,
  a consistent low-stimulation routine repeated nightly

Commonly assumed to help, but often doesn't:
  Scrolling a phone "to wind down" — the content and blue
  light exposure typically increase, not decrease, arousal,
