JoSAA Counselling — Seat Allocation Process
What JoSAA Does
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts centralised counselling for admission to all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced ranks. A single counselling process replaced separate IIT and NIT counselling from 2015 onward.
The Counselling Timeline
1.Registration & Choice Filling — candidates register on the JoSAA portal and fill in an ordered list of institute+branch combinations (a candidate might list 50–200+ choices).
2.Mock Seat Allotment — 1–2 rounds of mock allotment let candidates see where they'd likely land and revise choices before the real rounds begin.
3.Seat Allotment Rounds — typically 5–6 rounds, each allotting seats based on rank, category, and remaining vacancies from the choice list.
4.Reporting/Freezing/Floating/Sliding — after each round, a candidate can freeze (accept and exit), float (accept but stay in the pool for a better seat), or slide (accept but only within the same institute for a better branch).
5.Document Verification & Fee Payment — required after accepting a seat in any round, done online with an in-person or online verification step depending on the year's process.
Category-wise Cutoffs — What Actually Matters
Opening and closing ranks vary hugely by institute, branch, category (General/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS), and gender-neutral vs female-only pools (post-2018, a Supra-numerary female pool increased seats for women in NITs/IIITs/GFTIs). Aspirants should study the previous 2–3 years' JoSAA opening/closing rank data for their target branches rather than relying on rough estimates.
Choice Filling Strategy
•List choices in genuine order of preference, not "safe first" — since JoSAA always tries to upgrade you to a higher preference in later rounds if your rank allows it.
•Don't leave out institutes/branches you'd actually accept just because they seem like a downgrade — an empty slot in your list is a missed seat, not a reserved better outcome.
•Track your Category rank alongside your All India Rank — many seats are allocated on category rank, which can differ significantly in competitiveness from the general rank.
After JoSAA: CSAB Special Rounds
Candidates who don't get a seat through JoSAA (or want to explore additional GFTI seats) can participate in CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) special rounds, which run after the main JoSAA process concludes and allocate any remaining vacant seats.
