Mains-level puzzles: resolving contradictory-seeming clues through elimination
This is the key skill differentiating Mains-level puzzle performance from Prelims-level: Prelims puzzles are generally solvable through direct, sequential clue application (the Fundamentals tab's method suffices), while Mains puzzles frequently require this elimination-across-the-full-clue-set technique specifically because no single clue directly resolves the stuck variable — only the combination of all clues, checked systematically against each remaining possibility, narrows to one valid answer. Recognizing when direct placement has stalled (rather than continuing to re-read the same clues hoping for a new insight) and switching to systematic elimination is itself a trained skill worth practicing deliberately on genuinely hard puzzles.
Speed under Mains-level difficulty: a different time-budget mindset than Prelims
A candidate who's built strong Prelims-level speed sometimes carries an unrealistic expectation into Mains preparation, assuming similar per-puzzle time should be achievable — Mains puzzles are deliberately harder and genuinely require more time even for a well-prepared candidate using correct technique, and the actual skill to build for Mains isn't "solve as fast as Prelims" but rather "correctly identify, within the first 60-90 seconds, whether a puzzle is solvable within a reasonable time budget or should be deprioritized in favor of other questions" — since Mains sections have limited total time across many questions, and getting stuck on one very hard puzzle at the cost of several easier questions elsewhere is a real, common strategic error.
Computer Aptitude: a genuinely different skill category within the reasoning umbrella
Treating Computer Aptitude with the same "practice daily for pattern recognition" approach that works for puzzles is a category error — this sub-section rewards direct content knowledge (knowing binary conversion methods, basic computer terminology) more than logical pattern recognition, and candidates who apply reasoning-section study habits (heavy repetition-based puzzle practice) to Computer Aptitude without also doing direct content study of the underlying factual material often underperform in this specific sub-section relative to their general reasoning strength, simply because it's testing a genuinely different skill.
Building genuine adaptability for novel puzzle structures
