The general state-PSC exam pattern
State PSC exams — TNPSC included, and this pattern recurs with state-specific variation across KPSC, MPSC, APPSC, and TSPSC covered elsewhere in this technology cluster — generally follow a three-stage structure: a Preliminary exam (objective-type, screening a large applicant pool down to a manageable number for the next stage), a Mains exam (typically more detailed, sometimes descriptive/subjective depending on the Group level), and an Interview/viva-voce stage for senior Group-level posts (typically Group I and comparable senior positions; lower Groups often skip the interview stage entirely, hiring directly based on written exam performance). General Studies — the Samacheer Kalvi foundation
TNPSC's General Studies component (tested across most Groups) draws its content foundation from Samacheer Kalvi, Tamil Nadu's state board curriculum — Overview introduces this connection; Fundamentals makes the practical implication concrete: candidates should treat Samacheer Kalvi Class VI-XII social science (history, geography, civics, economics) and science textbooks as primary source material, not supplementary reading. This differs meaningfully from UPSC preparation, which typically draws from NCERT's pan-India curriculum — a candidate transferring UPSC preparation directly to TNPSC without adjusting for this curricular difference will find gaps specifically in Tamil-Nadu-weighted content Samacheer Kalvi emphasizes that NCERT doesn't cover to the same depth.
Why state-specific curricular grounding matters
The reason TNPSC (and state PSCs generally) weight state board curriculum so heavily traces back to these exams' purpose: state government roles require genuine familiarity with the specific state's administrative structure, history, geography, and socioeconomic context — testing against a state-specific curricular foundation is a direct, structural way of assessing this state-specific grounding, rather than assuming pan-India general knowledge adequately substitutes for it.
The Tamil language paper
Most TNPSC Groups include a Tamil language paper, testing comprehension, grammar, and composition — this isn't a token formality but a substantively weighted component reflecting Tamil's role as the state's administrative and educational medium. Candidates whose education wasn't primarily in Tamil medium should treat this as a genuinely separate preparation area requiring dedicated attention, not an area where general language aptitude alone suffices.
