GATE CSE Overview

What is GATE CSE?

GATE CSE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering — Computer Science and Engineering) is a national-level entrance exam for:

Admission to M.Tech/M.S programs at IITs, NITs, IISc, and other premier institutes
PSU recruitment: DRDO, ISRO, NTPC, ONGC, BEL, and others
Direct PhD admissions at IISc and IITs

Exam Pattern

DURATION: 3 hours | TOTAL MARKS: 100

GENERAL APTITUDE (GA): 15 marks
  Verbal Ability: 5 marks (1-mark questions)
  Numerical Ability: 10 marks (1 and 2-mark questions)

TECHNICAL SECTION: 85 marks
  1-mark MCQ: approximately 25 questions = 25 marks
  2-mark MCQ: approximately 25 questions = 50 marks (with negative marking)
  Numerical Answer Type (NAT): approximately 5 questions = 10 marks (no negative marking)

NEGATIVE MARKING:
  MCQ 1-mark: -1/3 per wrong answer
  MCQ 2-mark: -2/3 per wrong answer
  NAT: no negative marking (always attempt NAT questions)

  Algorithms + DS: 20-25%
  OS + Networks: 20-25%
  Digital Logic + COA: 15-20%
  Discrete Maths + Engineering Maths: 15-20%
  Compiler + TOC + Databases: 15-20%

Preparation Timeline

12 MONTHS (ideal):
  Month 1-3:   Cover all subjects (one topic per day, make notes)
  Month 4-5:   Solve standard textbook exercises
  Month 6-7:   Previous year papers (2010-2024) topic-wise
  Month 8-9:   Full-length mock tests (Gate Overflow, Made Easy, ACE)
  Month 10-11: Revision and weak area focus
  Month 12:    Final revision, previous 5 years full papers

6 MONTHS (for repeat aspirants):
  Month 1-2:   Refresh all subjects quickly
  Month 3-4:   Previous year papers topic-wise
  Month 5:     Mock tests and analysis
  Month 6:     Revision + recent year papers

Cutoff and Opportunities

CUTOFF SCORE (GATE marks out of 100, not rank):
  IIT admissions: 60-75+ for CSE at top IITs
  NIT admissions: 50-65 for CSE NITs
  PSU cutoff: DRDO/ISRO 70+ | NTPC/BEL 50-60

GATE SCORE vs GATE MARKS:
  Score = 1000 × (marks - qualifying marks) / (top score - qualifying marks)
  Score range: 0 to 1000 (not same as marks)

VALIDITY: GATE score valid for 3 years
ATTEMPTS: unlimited attempts | no age limit for M.Tech
