Taking a mock test the way it actually helps: full exam conditions, not casual practice

A mock test taken with music playing, phone nearby, and the ability to pause and resume doesn't train the actual skill NEET requires — sustained 3-hour focus under real time pressure with zero interruptions:

Real mock test conditions, every time:
  - Exact 3-hour window, no pausing
  - No phone, no reference material, silent room
  - Same time of day as the actual exam if possible
    (builds a genuine circadian/alertness rhythm for exam day)
  - OMR sheet bubbling practice, not just selecting answers
    on a screen (physical bubbling takes real time NTA's
    3-hour window already accounts for — skipping this
    practice underestimates your actual available thinking time)

A candidate who's only ever practiced under relaxed conditions and attempts their first genuinely timed, distraction-free mock close to the actual exam date is testing their exam-day performance for the first time far too late to meaningfully improve it — building genuine exam-condition tolerance is itself a trainable skill, separate from subject knowledge, and needs the same repeated practice.

Time allocation: the starting framework before you personalize it

180 questions, 180 minutes = 1 minute/question average — but NOT
  a uniform 1 minute per question in practice; the right approach
  allocates time by subject and by question difficulty:

Biology (90 Q, 360 marks) — ~50 min  (highest mark value, often
  fastest per-question — largely recall-based)
Physics (45 Q, 180 marks) — ~65 min  (typically the most
  time-consuming per question — calculation-heavy)
Chemistry (45 Q, 180 marks) — ~65 min

This leaves genuine buffer time for review — don't plan to use
  the full 180 minutes on first-pass attempts alone

This is a starting framework, not a rule to follow rigidly — the actual right allocation depends on individual strength/speed per subject, which is exactly why systematic mock analysis (covered on the Intermediate tab) matters: it reveals your own actual per-subject pace, which may differ meaningfully from this generic starting split.

Negative marking: the strategic decision most candidates get wrong early on

NEET scoring: +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect, 0 for unattempted

Expected value of a guess:
  If you can eliminate 0 options (pure guess, 25% chance correct):
    EV = 0.25×(+4) + 0.75×(-1) = +1 - 0.75 = +0.25
    (technically positive, but genuinely risky variance)
  If you can eliminate 2 of 4 options (50% chance correct):
    EV = 0.5×(+4) + 0.5×(-1) = +2 - 0.5 = +1.5
    (a much better bet — confident partial elimination is
    worth attempting; a pure blind guess is a much weaker bet)

The practical guidance this expected-value math supports: a pure blind guess with zero elimination is technically positive-EV but high-variance and generally not worth the risk at scale across many questions — the meaningfully better strategy is attempting a question specifically when you can eliminate at least 1-2 options through partial knowledge, and leaving a genuinely unknown question blank rather than guessing completely blind. This is a real strategic skill, not just knowing the scoring formula — it requires honest self-assessment of "do I actually have partial knowledge here, or am I about to guess blind" in real time during the exam, under time pressure.

Building the mock test habit progressively, matching the phase schedule

The Overview tab's 3-phase schedule (chapter-wise → subject-wise → full mocks) exists specifically to build up exam stamina and pattern familiarity progressively, rather than jumping straight to full 3-hour mocks before the underlying subject knowledge and shorter-format practice are solid:

Why NOT start with full mocks immediately:
  A full 3-hour mock, attempted before chapter-level knowledge
  is solid, mostly measures "how much do I not know yet" rather
  than genuinely testing exam-taking skill and time management —
  the diagnostic value of a mock is much higher once baseline
  subject knowledge is already reasonably established

Following the phased progression isn't just pacing for its own sake — it's specifically sequencing mocks so that each one provides genuinely useful diagnostic information (revealing exam-skill gaps, not just knowledge gaps that chapter-level study should have already addressed) rather than an early full mock producing an overwhelming, low-actionable-value result that mostly just measures how much material hasn't been covered yet.

The single most valuable, most-skipped habit: honest mock analysis

The Overview tab explicitly calls this out as "most skipped" — and it's worth being explicit about why it's skipped and why that's a real, costly mistake: analyzing every wrong answer (why wrong — concept unclear, silly mistake, guessed, or unnecessarily negative-marked) takes real, dedicated time after an already-exhausting 3-hour mock, and it's tempting to simply move to the next mock instead. But a mock test's actual value is almost entirely in this analysis step — taking the mock itself without follow-up analysis produces a score number and very little of the diagnostic information that would actually improve the next attempt.
