A candidate scores 48 marks. For this session, Mq (qualifying marks) = 30 and Mt (mean of top 0.1%) = 70. Using the same Mq = 30 and Mt = 70, compute the GATE score for a candidate with M = 60 marks instead of 48.
You should land on: S = 350 + 550 × (60−30)/(70−30) = 350 + 550 × (30/40) = 350 + 550 × 0.75 = 350 + 412.5 = 762.5 — a full 165 points higher than 597.5, from a 12-raw-mark difference. Because Mq and Mt are the same fixed values in both calculations, the formula is linear in M within a single session — a 12-raw-mark increase always produces the same fixed score-point increase (165 points here), REGARDLESS of the specific starting M, as long as Mq and Mt don't change.
